Supreme Court stray dog order

New Delhi, 22 August (Kiran News). The Supreme Court’s three-judge bench has revised the earlier order by a two-judge bench, stating that stray dogs in Delhi will be released from shelters only after they have been immunised and sterilised. The bench, headed by Justice Vikram Nath, said that the ban on releasing stray dogs from shelters is lifted with these conditions.

The Supreme Court made it clear that dogs with aggressive behaviour or rabies will not be released from shelters. The court also said that stray dogs cannot be fed on the streets. The responsibility of designating feeding spots for stray dogs has been given to the municipal corporation. The court announced it will conduct a detailed hearing on the matter and prepare a policy for the entire country.

The court had reserved its order on 14 August. Earlier, on 11 August, the bench of Justice JB Pardiwala had issued strict instructions to free the streets and lanes of Delhi-NCR from stray dogs. That bench directed the Delhi government, Delhi Municipal Corporation, and the New Delhi Municipal Council to clear all areas of stray dogs and keep them in dog shelters. Animal rights activists had strongly opposed Justice Pardiwala’s decision. Following this, the three-judge bench held a hearing on 14 August as per the Chief Justice’s instructions.
