SSB Arrests Bangladeshi National Near India-Nepal Border in West Bengal

Kolkata, June 15: On Sunday, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) apprehended a Bangladeshi national near the India-Nepal border in northern West Bengal.

The individual, identified as Nandan Das, was caught during a routine check at the BIT Old Bridge in Panitanki. He lacked the necessary documents to enter India legally.

An SSB officer reported that Das was intercepted approximately 350 meters from the international border, near border pillar number 90. He was detained during standard checks and searches. Authorities seized a Bangladeshi passport, an airline boarding pass from Bangladesh to Nepal, a mobile phone, two Bangladeshi SIM cards, one Nepali SIM card, and 2,580 Indian rupees from him. Das hails from Umidpur village in the Shibchar area of Madaripur district, Bangladesh.

During questioning, Das claimed he is a Bangladeshi citizen who traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, on February 1, 2026, with the help of an agent who promised him a job in Serbia. He stated that he paid the agent between 300,000 to 500,000 rupees, after which the agent disappeared.

After his visa expired, Nandan Das secured a job in Pokhara, Nepal.

After working in Pokhara for two months, he decided to return to Bangladesh via India.

Some officials suspect that Nandan Das intentionally entered India and surrendered to SSB personnel, knowing that Bangladeshi infiltrators are being sent back to their country.

However, due to his illegal entry into India, he may face imprisonment. He has been handed over to the police for further legal action under the Foreigners Act.
