Chennai, 30 December. The Sri Lankan Navy arrested three Indian fishermen on Tuesday morning and seized their fishing trawler, escalating tensions in the fishing community of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
This incident once again highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen in the Palk Strait region.
According to the Rameswaram Fisheries Department, the arrested fishermen have been identified as Ruban, Nagarajan, and Prabhu.
With official permission, the trio had set out late Monday night from the Rameswaram Fishing Harbour.
While fishing near Nedunthivu (Delft Island), the Sri Lankan Navy’s patrolling team intercepted and took them into custody. Their mechanised trawler was seized and later taken to the Karainagar naval base in northern Sri Lanka.
Officials stated that a total of 415 fishing tokens were issued on Monday, after which fishermen went out to sea.
Most boats were expected to return by Tuesday evening. However, news of the arrests spread quickly, creating fear and uncertainty among the families awaiting their return.
V.P. Jesu Raja, a leader of the fishermen’s association in Rameswaram, expressed deep concern over the repeated detentions, saying the community is facing severe distress.
He added, “Despite repeated appeals by fishermen and state authorities, our livelihood concerns are being ignored. The governments of India and Sri Lanka must engage in high-level talks to find a permanent solution.”
Representatives of the fishermen said this is the third such incident in less than two weeks. In the past 15 days alone, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested at least 13 fishermen from the area and seized three trawlers.
Many previously detained fishermen were released only after paying heavy fines imposed by Sri Lankan courts, creating a financially difficult situation for the economically weaker fishermen.
Jesuraja further said, “With our boats being seized and rising legal costs, survival is becoming harder. Every time we go to sea, we live with fear and uncertainty.” He appealed to the central government for immediate intervention to ensure the release of the detained fishermen and their vessels.
