Spring Festival Boosts Consumer Spending in China

Beijing, February 21: The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has reported a significant increase in consumer spending during the Spring Festival holidays. On February 19, various commerce departments across the country organized a special “Happy Shopping for the Spring Festival” event, enhancing policy support and continuously boosting consumption potential during the holidays.

Data indicates that during the first four days of the holiday, the average daily sales of major retail and catering enterprises increased by 8.6% compared to the same period in 2025. Specifically, the number of pedestrians and sales revenue on 78 monitored pedestrian streets rose by 4.5% and 4.8%, respectively, during the first three days of the holiday compared to last year.

In terms of product consumption, the trade-in program continued to stimulate consumer demand. As of February 18, 2026, approximately 28.44 million people benefited from the consumer goods trade-in program, generating sales of 196.39 billion yuan. There is also a high demand for smart products, with duty-free sales in Hainan experiencing rapid growth.

Regarding service consumption, domestic tourism spending on major platforms increased by 4.5% during the first three days of the holiday. Additionally, car rental orders on these platforms surged by 26%.
