
New Delhi, May 8: The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has established a Special Task Force to investigate the damage to lychee crops in Bihar and to devise relief measures for affected farmers. The task force is expected to submit its report within a week, as stated in a release on Friday.
During an interaction held at the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture in Lucknow, farmers informed the minister about the extensive damage to lychee crops caused by pests.
According to the statement, the task force members will visit the affected areas and present a report that includes recommendations for remedial measures.
An order issued by the National Lychee Research Centre in Muzaffarpur on May 7 indicated that the task force will assess the current situation regarding lychee pests and conduct a scientific study of the crop damage. It will also suggest immediate and long-term measures to provide relief to farmers.
The task force will recommend necessary advice and extension activities for farmers, along with interventions required at both state and central levels.
The task force comprises scientists, officials, and experts from various institutions. The director of the National Lychee Research Centre in Muzaffarpur has been appointed as the panel’s chair.
As per the order, the task force will soon visit the most affected blocks in Bihar’s lychee-producing districts and report to the Agriculture Minister within a week to ensure timely action.
Members of the task force include representatives designated by the Director of Horticulture and the Bihar State Horticulture Mission, the Director of Plant Protection from the Bihar Agriculture Department, and entomologists from Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa, and Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Bhagalpur.
The panel also includes Dr. Jaipal Singh Chaudhary from the ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region and experts from the National Agricultural Pest Resource Bureau in Bengaluru, as well as scientists from the ICAR-National Lychee Research Centre, Muzaffarpur. Dr. Vinod Kumar, a principal scientist, will serve as the member secretary of the task force.
