Caracas, June 28: Venezuela’s seismic research agency, Funvisis, reported a 4.1 magnitude earthquake felt in the central region of the country on Saturday. This tremor occurred as residents were already on edge from two significant and destructive earthquakes earlier in the week.
According to the agency, the epicenter of this latest quake was located about 35 kilometers west of La Guaira, a major port city in the central coastal area. Following the powerful earthquakes on Wednesday, La Guaira had been declared a disaster zone due to extensive damage.
Officials noted that Saturday’s earthquake struck just five kilometers below the surface. Shallow earthquakes like this one are often felt more intensely and pose a greater risk of damaging buildings.
Residents in Caracas and surrounding areas also experienced the tremors. Many evacuated buildings in fear of further damage or potential collapses. This earthquake came just days after the two earlier quakes, which caused significant destruction, including building collapses, landslides, and loss of life.
Authorities are currently focused on managing rescue and relief efforts. Rescue teams are working to reach those stranded in coastal and mountainous regions.
Funvisis stated that while Saturday’s quake was not particularly large, its shallow depth and the weakened state of buildings have raised concerns. Experts indicate that aftershocks are common following major earthquakes and can further compromise already vulnerable structures.
Local authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols. Emergency services are on high alert, with teams inspecting critical infrastructure such as hospitals, bridges, and power systems.
In light of the situation’s severity, the government has also requested international assistance.
Seismologists are closely monitoring developments, and Funvisis is maintaining 24-hour surveillance. The agency has advised the public to rely solely on official information and to avoid spreading rumors that could incite fear and panic.
