Chennai, August 29: The state government has announced a special state-level camp at all ration shops in Tamil Nadu this Saturday. During this event, the fingerprint authentication process linked to electronic family cards will be completed.
The camp will run from 9 AM to 5 PM. Officials have urged ration card holders who have not yet registered their fingerprints to visit their respective fair price shops to complete this process.
An official statement from the government indicated that the central government had instructed states to conduct biometric verification for every beneficiary connected to electronic ration cards. This process includes beneficiaries under the ‘Priority Household’ category and those with ‘Antyodaya Anna Yojana’ cards, as per the National Food Security Act.
Following the central government’s directive, Tamil Nadu began the fingerprint authentication for family members in October 2023. Ration shop employees were instructed to carry out this task without disrupting the regular distribution of essential goods or causing inconvenience to cardholders. According to the government, biometric authentication has been completed for 96.21% of beneficiaries holding ‘Priority Ration Cards’ so far.
This special camp has been organized to include the remaining beneficiaries and achieve 100% completion across the state. Officials clarified that the camp is primarily for those members whose fingerprints have not yet been taken or verified. Beneficiaries are advised to visit their nearest ration shop during the designated hours to register their fingerprints.
The government has appealed to families to ensure that members pending verification complete it as soon as possible. During the camp, beneficiaries can seek assistance from ration shop staff to facilitate the process. Officials are optimistic that this initiative will streamline biometric registration and prevent beneficiaries from making repeated visits. The government stated that with the cooperation of cardholders, the authentication campaign can be completed efficiently, ensuring that food security benefits are delivered without delay.
