Chennai, August 29: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has forecast moderate rain with thunderstorms in some areas of Tamil Nadu‘s Western Ghats over the next four days.
Meteorological officials reported that a low-pressure area has formed in the lower atmosphere over the coastal regions of the state. As a result, light rain is expected in several districts on Saturday, particularly in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram. Light rain is also anticipated during the day in the delta districts, as well as in neighboring Puducherry and Karaikal.
While heavy rainfall is not expected, the sporadic rain may provide temporary relief from the heat in various parts of the state.
The Regional Meteorological Centre indicated that moderate rain could occur in one or two places in districts adjacent to the Western Ghats until August 31. Thunderstorms may bring winds of up to 50 km/h. Residents are advised to exercise caution during thunderstorms, especially by staying away from open areas, trees, or weak structures. Despite the possibility of rain, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu could rise by three degrees Celsius above normal over the next four days. Consequently, areas that do not receive rain may continue to experience heat and discomfort.
Additionally, a separate warning has been issued for fishermen operating along the southern Tamil Nadu coast. Poor weather conditions with strong winds (up to 65 km/h) are expected in the sea until August 31.
Fishermen are advised to refrain from venturing into the coastal waters of southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjacent Comorin Sea during this warning period. Those already at sea are urged to exercise caution and follow official updates from the meteorological department. Authorities have also recommended that fishing communities secure their boats and equipment due to the anticipated strong winds.
Small fishing boats are particularly at risk in stormy seas. Therefore, crews are advised to suspend operations until conditions improve and the meteorological department officially lifts its warnings after reassessment.
