Ujjain, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Early on September 22, 2026, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain hosted a special Bhasma Aarti in honor of Parivartini Ekadashi, part of the Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. A large number of devotees gathered to witness this extraordinary event.
The temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The air was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and the recitation of mantras.
As the doors opened, the rituals began with the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal, using Panchamrit made from water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The first bell was rung to offer Haridra water. After the camphor Aarti, Baba adorned a crown. The Bhasma Aarti was performed amidst the sounds of traditional instruments like the jhanjhar, manjira, and drums.
During the ceremony, Baba Mahakal was adorned with bhang, and sacred Bel leaves inscribed with the name of Lord Ram were offered. The temple priest conducted the Mahaarati, allowing many devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti. Devotees had queued since the previous night, eager for a glimpse of their revered deity. Traditional attire was mandatory, with men wearing dhoti and women in sarees.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after this offering, Baba Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees. Many pilgrims travel to the holy city of Ujjain to participate in this sacred ritual.
