Nagpur, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : The All India Congress Committee’s national secretary, Ramkrishna Ojha, has voiced serious concerns regarding the worsening drought conditions in Maharashtra. He is calling on the central government to provide immediate assistance to farmers facing dire circumstances.
Ojha stated, “Maharashtra is currently experiencing severe drought, leading to a critical shortage of fodder. Farmers are deeply distressed about their crops. I fear that soon there will be no water available for livestock. This is a grave issue.”
He suggested that instead of lighting lamps on the Prime Minister’s birthday, the funds could be better utilized by sending support directly to farmers, which would provide significant relief.
Ojha emphasized that Congress has the largest number of MPs in Maharashtra, all of whom are concerned about the plight of farmers. He announced plans to meet with Prime Minister Modi to discuss the issue, stressing that this is a matter affecting millions and should not be politicized. The Maharashtra government must mobilize effectively to provide substantial financial assistance to farmers across villages, he urged.
He also recalled the loan waivers implemented during former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure, noting that there has been no significant loan relief since then. The burden of old debts continues to drive farmers to despair, leading some to consider suicide. Therefore, he appealed to the central government to release funds urgently to support farmers.
In response to the Congress MPs‘ planned meeting with the Prime Minister regarding the drought situation, Maharashtra government minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule remarked, “It is essential to meet with the Prime Minister and convey the reality of our situation. There should be no hesitation in presenting the facts, and the central government has previously extended help during droughts. When all MPs meet, I am confident that we will receive a positive response from Prime Minister Modi.”
