South Koreas HMM Launches Sea Trials for 10,800-Vehicle Carrier

Beijing, March 31: South Korea’s HMM company has initiated sea trials for its groundbreaking 10,800-vehicle capacity LNG dual-fuel carrier, constructed by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) at the Kwangcho Shipyard International.

This vessel is the world’s first dual-fuel car carrier currently under construction, capable of transporting over 10,000 vehicles.

Measuring 230 meters in length and 40 meters in width, the ship features a structural draft of 10.5 meters and can reach speeds of approximately 19 nautical miles, striking an ideal balance between efficient transport and stable navigation.

The design includes a garage with 14 decks, allowing for flexible loading of various vehicles, including electric cars, hydrogen-powered vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks, with a maximum capacity of 10,800 vehicles per ship.

The vessel employs a dual-fuel propulsion system using both diesel and LNG, equipped with a shaft-driven generator that generates electricity during navigation, promoting energy conservation and reducing emissions. It boasts excellent environmental performance, meeting the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards.

Car carriers are high-tech, high-value vessels, and their construction is complex and technically advanced. The successful completion of this ship’s construction and sea trials indicates that Kwangcho Shipyard International has mastered the technology for building such vessels, maintaining its leading position in this market segment.
