Washington, April 1: Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, the United States has intensified its counter-terrorism efforts. The Pentagon recently announced that elements linked to Al-Qaeda operating within Iran are now on the U.S. target list.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed reporters at a Pentagon press conference, emphasizing that despite military operations against Iran, the focus on counter-terrorism remains strong.
He stated, “Al-Qaeda continues to be our enemy, and many individuals within Iran are included on our target list.” Hegseth clarified that anyone associated with the organization and operating from Iranian territory would be considered a legitimate target. If they are harboring Al-Qaeda, they will certainly be included in that list.
These comments came in response to questions about the potential presence of Al-Qaeda leadership within Iran. Hegseth highlighted the broad scope of U.S. targets, indicating that many individuals in Iran are on the list, which suggests that counter-terrorism priorities remain integral to military plans.
The Pentagon noted that these assessments are part of a comprehensive strategy to track and neutralize threats that could impact U.S. forces and regional stability.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Dan Keen, indicated that pressure on Iran’s military structure continues, potentially limiting the activities of militant groups. He mentioned that precise strikes against key manufacturing centers, parts storage sites, and research facilities are ongoing.
Officials also clarified that all operations are conducted under established procedures. Keen stated, “We have multiple processes and systems in place to carefully consider everything from risks to civilians to legal aspects… and we always target legitimate threats.”
These statements suggest that the conflict may extend beyond traditional military objectives to include actions against non-state actors active within Iranian territory.
