Beijing, August 10: The Snow Dragon-2, part of China’s 16th Arctic Ocean expedition team, commenced its ice station survey on August 9. This operation is taking place near the 84-degree North latitude in the central Arctic Ocean region.
The Snow Dragon-2 is set to conduct over 20 tasks across seven ice stations during this voyage. These tasks include the deployment of disposable ice-based buoys, ice core sampling, and remote sensing observations of sea ice.
This extensive survey aims to monitor various parameters related to the atmosphere, sea ice, upper ocean, and subglacial ecosystems, especially as Arctic sea ice undergoes rapid changes. The collected scientific data will facilitate the study of these transformations and their impacts on ecosystems.
One of the significant threats during the survey is the presence of polar bears. The expedition team has developed an emergency plan to ensure the safety of its members while avoiding encounters with these animals.
