New Delhi, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Smriti Irani, the national general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), launched a sharp critique of Congress during a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday. She focused on Congress’s recent claims regarding the electoral rolls, specifically mentioning the 13.3 million names that the Election Commission addressed in a statement on September 26.
Irani questioned why Congress would want to restore the names of deceased individuals or duplicate entries on the electoral rolls. She emphasized that the Election Commission has clarified its procedures, stating that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are actively working to issue notices to such individuals and are collecting documents to verify their status.
“Why does Congress insist on keeping the names of the deceased and duplicates in the electoral rolls?” Irani asked. She noted that the Election Commission has already provided a public explanation, raising concerns about Congress’s intentions.
Additionally, Irani responded strongly to Congress’s reference to the Lahore Congress session. She expressed disbelief that the party would invoke this historical event, suggesting that if Congress wants to revisit history, it should also acknowledge the context in which it was formed. She pointed out that A.O. Hume, a British official, had proposed the creation of the Congress Party to maintain British rule in India.
“This is documented in historical records,” Irani stated. “To attack the Election Commission by recalling the Lahore Congress session is one of the most shameful acts.”
