Srinagar, February 17: Six police officers stationed at the Observation Home in R.S. Pura, Jammu and Kashmir, were suspended on Tuesday following the escape of three inmates. Among those who fled are two Pakistani nationals and a local gangster from R.S. Pura.

The escape occurred after the inmates attacked the police officers on duty at the social welfare department’s Observation Home on Monday. The escapees have been identified as local gangster Karanjeet Singh, also known as Gugga, and Pakistani citizens Mohammad Sunullah and Ahsan Anwar.

Authorities reported that Karanjeet Gugga’s mother also went missing on Tuesday, raising suspicions that the escape might be part of a larger conspiracy. The incident took place around 5:15 PM on Monday.

Immediately after the escape, police registered a case and launched a massive search operation to recapture the fugitives. Several police teams have been formed, and raids are being conducted at various locations to apprehend the escaped inmates.

Following the breakout, police quickly cordoned off the surrounding areas. The Observation Home, operated by the social welfare department in R.S. Pura, was established in 1988.

This facility caters to juvenile children who are under trial or have violated the law. It provides accommodation, counseling, education, and rehabilitation services. The home operates under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and is intended for temporary care during legal inquiries.

Children under the age of 18 are temporarily housed in the Observation Home until their cases are investigated or tried by the Juvenile Justice Board. They receive food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and rehabilitation support to help them become responsible citizens.

These homes are often established in partnership with NGOs under Section 47 of the JJ Act, 2015. Unlike special homes (which focus on long-term rehabilitation after sentencing) and children’s homes (which care for needy children), Observation Homes are specifically designed for under-trial minors. Separate facilities are required for boys and girls, and arrangements may vary based on age.
