New Delhi, February 13: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced six members of the banned terrorist organization, People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), to ten years in prison each. This ruling pertains to a case involving terrorism, arms, and extortion dating back to 2018.
The NIA special court in Ranchi, Jharkhand, delivered the sentences on Friday. The convicted individuals were found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act.
The sentenced individuals are Gulab Kumar Yadav, Ravi Yadav, Rakesh Kumar Paswan, Pawan Kumar Yadav, Santosh Yadav, and Suresh Yadav. They were convicted last week.
Investigations revealed that these individuals were active members of PLFI, participating in militant activities, extortion, recruitment of new members, and other criminal and terrorist operations.
The NIA’s probe also uncovered that the accused were acquiring illegal weapons through PLFI and were involved in spreading terror via violent incidents and extortion.
Further investigations indicated that Santosh Yadav, who served as the sub-zonal commander for Latehar and Chatra districts, played a crucial role in recruiting members and providing leadership and direction. Meanwhile, Suresh Yadav acted as an overground worker and logistics supporter, assisting in the supply of illegal weapons and ammunition.
This case was registered in December 2018 after Jharkhand police conducted a search operation in the Titir Mahua forest area of the Balumath police station, based on intelligence reports suggesting that armed PLFI members were meeting there.
Four accused were arrested at the scene, where two foreign rifles, a large quantity of ammunition, SIM cards, and mobile phones were seized.
In June 2019, the NIA took over the case from Jharkhand police and filed a chargesheet against the six accused in February 2020. During the trial, the prosecution successfully proved that the accused were involved in organized terrorist activities, arms procurement, and running an extortion network.
