Lucknow, March 13: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, inaugurated the Green Corridor project in Lucknow on Friday, dedicating it to the public. Singh stated that this initiative will not only streamline the city’s traffic system but also serve as a significant example of environmental protection and integrated urban development. The launch event took place in the city’s Jhulelal area, attended by several state ministers, public representatives, and BJP officials.
During the event, Singh highlighted that the Green Corridor, stretching approximately seven kilometers from the Daliganj Bridge to Samtamulak Chowk, is now dedicated to the people of Lucknow. This project is expected to directly benefit around 1.5 million residents and enhance traffic flow in the city. He emphasized that the collaboration between the civil and defense sectors was crucial for the project’s success, noting effective use of defense land despite challenges related to land allocation.
Singh remarked that when the civil and defense sectors work in harmony, the pace of development accelerates significantly, and this project exemplifies that synergy. He also announced plans to extend the Green Corridor by about 10 kilometers from Samtamulak Chowk to Shaheed Path. This extension will connect major ring roads like Shaheed Path and Kisan Path, alleviating traffic congestion and reducing travel time for residents.
The Minister pointed out that the project was designed with environmental conservation in mind. During construction, any trees that posed an obstacle were carefully relocated rather than cut down. Over 150 trees have been successfully transplanted to new locations.
He added that the state is focusing on cleanliness alongside development, implementing a door-to-door waste collection system that has yielded positive results. Lucknow secured the third position in the country for million-plus cities in the Swachh Survekshan 2025.
Additionally, Singh announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the School of Planning and Architecture and the Lucknow Development Authority. This agreement aims to create a long-term master plan for the city’s development, ensuring it is organized and balanced.
Infrastructure development is also a priority, with open gyms installed in city parks to encourage exercise among the elderly and women. Furthermore, facilities like rest houses for patients and their families have been developed at King George Medical University to enhance healthcare services.
Rajnath Singh emphasized that Lucknow plays a vital role in strengthening the country’s security framework. He mentioned the establishment of BrahMos Aerospace’s integration and testing facility in the city, which is creating new opportunities for youth in the technical sector and bolstering the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
He also noted that the establishment of the Defense Corridor in the state and the launch of Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle plant in the Sarojini Nagar area are generating new employment opportunities. Projects such as metro expansion, ring roads, and flyovers are rapidly strengthening Lucknow’s infrastructure.
Singh concluded by stating that Lucknow’s rich culture and heritage are recognized worldwide, and discussions about the city’s development are now taking place on a global scale. He highlighted that UNESCO’s inclusion of Lucknow in the ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’ list honors the city’s rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions.
