Lucknow, March 13: The government is continuously innovating to promote clean energy and sustainable development. Following Auraiya, Ghaziabad has taken a significant and visionary step by presenting a model for encouraging residential solar energy in the state. The District Magistrate of Ghaziabad has issued orders mirroring those of the District Magistrate of Auraiya. Now, the process for approving building plans for new residential constructions in the district mandates the inclusion of solar rooftop systems and rainwater harvesting. This initiative aims not only to save electricity but also to ensure environmental protection and the sustainable use of water resources.
Under this proposal, relevant municipalities, municipal corporations, and town councils can pass resolutions in their board meetings to implement this system. After plan approval, the installation of solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems will be compulsory in construction. This will broaden the reach of clean energy in both urban and rural areas.
The Yogi government considers Ghaziabad’s initiative exemplary for other districts. The government believes that all districts in the state should make policy decisions at the level of third-tier urban and rural local bodies to enhance residential solar coverage according to local conditions. Notably, Uttar Pradesh is rapidly advancing in the domestic rooftop solar sector. Currently, the state has installed a total capacity of 1,440 megawatts of rooftop solar, generating over 6 million units of electricity. This electricity is produced without burning coal, significantly reducing adverse environmental impacts.
Through rooftop solar, citizens are benefiting from an average daily electricity savings of approximately 40 million rupees. Additionally, this initiative has strengthened the state’s economy, providing direct employment to around 60,000 people and indirect opportunities to millions. Furthermore, the solar rooftop model has preserved over 5,000 acres of land, which can now be utilized for other development projects. This initiative is becoming a robust solution for energy security, environmental protection, and economic empowerment. The Yogi government believes that implementing Auraiya’s model in other districts will position Uttar Pradesh among the leading states in the country in the clean energy sector, marking a strong step towards a greener future.
