New Delhi, October 19 (Daily Kiran): The Delhi Police have registered a case against six students, including top office-bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), following a protest that turned violent on campus. The remaining detained students have been handed over to university professors.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel, the case has been registered at Vasant Kunj North Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
The six named students include JNUSU President Nitesh Kumar (26), Vice-President Manisha (28), General Secretary Muntaha Fatima (28), Manikant Patel (27), Preeti Kar (27), and Shaurya Majumdar (28), a resident of East Mumbai.
The unrest broke out on Saturday evening during the student election process, when a section of students called for a march to the Vasant Kunj North police station. Despite not having permission, protesters allegedly broke police barricades, blocked Nelson Mandela Marg, and engaged in a heated confrontation with police.
During the scuffle, six police personnel sustained injuries while attempting to control the crowd. Police detained 28 students, including 19 male and 9 female students, among them the JNUSU president, vice-president, and general secretary.
Officials said police had been in communication with the students throughout the day, urging them to maintain peace and assuring them of due process. However, student leaders refused to withdraw their call for the march.
By around 6 p.m., nearly 70–80 students had gathered at the university’s west gate and proceeded towards Nelson Mandela Marg, where they were stopped by police barricades. When the crowd attempted to force its way through, police intervened and detained the participants to restore order.
The situation on campus remains under close observation, and further investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and accountability.
