Chennai, April 8: Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Tamil Nadu has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of first-time voters. According to data released by the Chief Electoral Officer’s office on Wednesday, there has been an approximately 33.6 percent rise in voters aged 18-19.
This demographic shift is significant, with the number of young voters rising from 1.09 million during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to the current 1.46 million.
There has also been a slight increase in the total number of voters. Following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, the number dropped to 56.7 million. However, as of the final registration deadline on April 6, this figure has increased by 636,000, bringing the total to 57.3 million.
This growth follows the inclusion of new applicants who submitted Form 6 after the publication of the final SIR voter list on February 13. These newly registered voters will be eligible to participate in the assembly elections.
The rise in first-time voters is particularly noteworthy as their share of the total electorate has increased. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, voters aged 18-19 comprised only 1.8 percent of the total electorate, which was then 62.3 million.
Despite the overall reduction in the total number of voters to 57.3 million post-SIR, the proportion of first-time voters has risen to 2.5 percent.
Election officials indicated that this increase was anticipated, as the SIR process resulted in the removal of many names across various age groups, thereby increasing the relative share of young voters. However, the sharp rise in absolute numbers suggests a strong enrollment of youth in recent weeks.
Of the 636,000 voters added since February 13, nearly one-third are first-time voters, raising their total from 1.259 million to 1.46 million.
The SIR process has brought significant changes to the voter lists. Before the revision began in October 2025, Tamil Nadu had 64.1 million voters. During the census phase in December, 9.734 million names were removed, reducing this number to 54.4 million. Following the resolution of claims and objections, the number increased to 56.7 million.
As of April 6, the state has 57,343,291 registered voters, including 29,304,905 women and 28,030,658 men. The number of women exceeds that of men by 1.274 million, maintaining a consistent trend. Additionally, there are 7,728 transgender voters, with Dharmapuri being the only district where the number of male voters slightly surpasses that of female voters.
