Siddaramaiah Accuses BJP of Spreading Falsehoods Amid Election Fears

Bagalkot, April 4: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated on Saturday that the BJP is running a misinformation campaign against the Congress government out of fear of losing the upcoming by-elections.

Speaking to the media in Bagalkot, he emphasized that the election campaign is progressing well, garnering support beyond expectations. Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that Congress will secure victories in both seats, citing unprecedented backing from the public.

He further asserted that the Congress government’s initiatives are aimed at the welfare of the poor, addressing the needs of people across various castes, religions, and languages.

While the BJP opposes the guarantee schemes, Siddaramaiah described these as investments in social commitment, integral to development. He stressed that development extends beyond infrastructure, encompassing economic and social security as well.

Siddaramaiah noted that the BJP has consistently opposed these social programs. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others have claimed the state would go bankrupt. However, he highlighted that the guarantee schemes have been in effect for the past three years, with ₹1.31 lakh crore spent as of March 24, 2026.

He clarified that there has been no reduction in spending on irrigation, public works, rural development, drinking water, police services, and SCSP/TSP schemes. Last year, ₹42,000 crore was spent, while over ₹44,000 crore is allocated for this year, ensuring that no development projects have stalled.

Accusing the BJP of spreading misinformation, Siddaramaiah countered their claims of excessive borrowing. He urged the BJP to properly read the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which mandates that states must meet three criteria. The fiscal deficit should remain within 3% of GDP, and debt must not exceed 25% of GSDP. He stated that Karnataka’s debt stands at 24.94%, well within the limits.

He added that no state can exceed the borrowing limit set by the central finance ministry and dismissed the BJP’s claims of excessive debt as outright lies. Siddaramaiah asserted that Karnataka has maintained financial discipline without violating any regulations.

He concluded by claiming that Karnataka’s economic performance surpasses that of the central government.
