Kolkata, April 14: The political landscape in West Bengal is heating up as the assembly elections approach. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of issuing special instructions to flying surveillance teams (FSTs) to inspect the vehicles of TMC leaders and their close relatives.
Among those targeted in the vehicle checks are TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife, Rujira Narula Banerjee, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been excluded from this scrutiny.
On Tuesday, TMC released a screenshot of a WhatsApp message purportedly sent by the ECI, which stated that all TMC leaders’ vehicles should be checked, excluding Mamata Banerjee.
The message raised concerns about potential money laundering under the guise of medical and blood donation camps, prompting the ECI to direct a thorough investigation into TMC leaders, state cabinet members, and their relatives.
However, the authenticity of the WhatsApp message shared by TMC with the media has not been independently verified. As of this report, neither the Election Commission nor the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has responded.
The TMC claims that these directives are a deliberate attempt to appease the BJP’s vendetta politics.
Questions have arisen regarding the authenticity of the WhatsApp message, particularly due to inconsistencies in the spelling of TMC General Secretary’s name. In one instance, it appears as ‘Avisek’ and in another as ‘Abhishek.’
Additionally, the screenshot lacks the surname of the individual mentioned, leading to speculation about whether the reference is indeed to the TMC General Secretary.
