
Beijing, April 14: Zhao Leqi, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, met with Gerry Brownlee, Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament, on April 13 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Zhao emphasized that the relationship between China and New Zealand is progressing positively, yielding fruitful cooperation across various sectors. He expressed China’s readiness to implement the significant agreements reached between President Xi Jinping and New Zealand leaders, enhance strategic dialogue, and deepen practical cooperation. He also stressed the importance of advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
Mutual respect, inclusivity, a focus on cooperation, and shared development have formed a strong foundation for the relationship over the past 50 years. Both sides should deepen mutual trust, maintain the core spirit of their relations, and achieve mutual benefits through collaboration. Zhao highlighted the need for both countries to respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, commending New Zealand for its continued adherence to the One-China policy.
Zhao further stated that China is committed to advancing development and cooperation with New Zealand. He underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration in traditional sectors such as agriculture, forestry, machinery, and electronics, while also exploring opportunities in new areas like the digital economy, green transformation, and artificial intelligence.
Brownlee remarked that New Zealand values its relationship with China highly. He noted that the relationship is mature and stable, founded on mutual trust and open dialogue. New Zealand adheres to the One-China policy and both nations are committed to improving the living standards of their citizens. He also praised China’s developmental achievements.
Both parties acknowledged the positive outcomes of cooperation in areas such as trade, economy, new energy, education, youth, and climate change. Additionally, cultural and humanitarian exchanges play a crucial role in strengthening bilateral relations. The New Zealand Parliament expressed its desire to further advance relations with China, deepen legislative cooperation, and enhance mutual understanding and friendship.
