New Delhi, March 15: Shubman Gill, the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams, has expressed that winning the ODI World Cup in 2027 is his ultimate goal. This prestigious trophy is something that frequently occupies his thoughts.
India came close to winning the ODI World Cup 2023 but faced defeat against Australia in the final match. The next ODI World Cup is scheduled for 2027, and all eyes will be on whether Gill can lead the team to victory in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
During a panel discussion at the BCCI’s ‘Naman Awards’ in New Delhi on Sunday, Gill stated, “Sometimes, it happens. Last time when we were in India, we felt we were very close to winning. Now, we have another opportunity in South Africa. I believe this will be a significant chance for us. Winning the World Cup for the country in any format is the biggest goal. So, it’s certainly something that crosses my mind occasionally.”
Reflecting on his journey, Gill recalled watching India win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 as a schoolboy and how he has now reached the point of lifting the same trophy in 2025.
He shared, “Watching it in 2013 as a child was special. Seeing my idols, Virat, Rohit, Ashwin, and Mahi, on screen and winning against England in the final was a remarkable feeling. As a child, you dream of reliving that experience. When you think about playing for your country, you envision winning an ICC trophy for your nation, and those are the moments you truly dream of. Achieving one of those is undoubtedly a dream come true, and it was a monumental moment for all of us. Winning the Champions Trophy after nearly 12 years will always be very special.”
When asked about the responsibilities of captaining in Tests and ODIs, Gill mentioned that he has managed to lighten the burden of captaincy. He emphasized focusing primarily on his main role as an opener. He said, “Honestly, it’s easier said than done. However, if you concentrate on what you need to do, it becomes manageable. I believe my primary job, first and foremost as a player and batsman, is to score runs. If I can score runs, everything else tends to fall into place. Therefore, my main focus has been on how I can contribute to the team. How can I score runs? Ultimately, you play to win the game, and you just need to focus on how you can help your team achieve victory.”
