Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay Appointed as Opposition Leader in West Bengal Amidst Political Turmoil

New Delhi, May 11: In a rare positive development amidst the despair and mutual blame within the defeated Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, seasoned leader Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the Opposition Leader.

The 80-year-old leader, widely regarded as the ‘right person in the wrong party,’ has reignited discussions about integrity and experience within the party. According to a mid-level Trinamool leader, Chattopadhyay might not have received this responsibility had former Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee won in her home constituency of Bhawanipur.

A former legislator noted that the recent electoral defeat has intensified scrutiny of the party leadership in the state. Mamata Banerjee has regained direct control over the party, while her nephew and party general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, faces criticism regarding the unexpected mandate.

Chattopadhyay’s relationship with Mamata Banerjee dates back to her early days as an emerging leader in Congress. Even today, he is viewed as a principled politician. His appointment as the Opposition Leader in the West Bengal Assembly at the age of 82 has reignited the debate about whether he represents the right values in the wrong political party.

Initially a member of Congress, Chattopadhyay later became one of the founding members of the Trinamool Congress. Over the years, he has held several key positions, including Minister of Power and Non-Conventional Energy, Deputy Leader of the House, and Chief Whip.

His appointment comes after Mamata Banerjee’s defeat to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Bhawanipur, leading to a reshuffle in the party’s legislative leadership.

The new opposition team in the Assembly also reflects the return of Mamata Banerjee’s loyalists. With 80 legislators in the 294-member Assembly, the Trinamool Congress is now the principal opposition party.

Nayana Bandyopadhyay, considered close to Mamata Banerjee, has been appointed as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition after winning from Chaurangi. She is the wife of senior party leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay. Asima Patra, who won from Dhanekhali, has been appointed as the second Deputy Leader.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, reports indicated that Abhishek Banerjee, seen as a proponent of youth leadership, opposed the renomination of Sudip Bandyopadhyay due to age. However, Mamata Banerjee rejected this proposal. Abhishek had also suggested a retirement age of 75 for leaders.
