Shivpuri, 1 January: A tigress attacked a villager in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district, leaving him seriously injured. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, while fear and anger prevail among the local residents.
According to reports, Shivlal Baghel, a 65-year-old resident of Dongar village near Satnawada, which borders Madhav Tiger Reserve, was working in his field about 100 metres from his home when the tigress hidden in the bushes suddenly attacked him. The cries of the injured man attracted nearby villagers who managed to chase the tigress away. The incident was promptly reported to the forest department’s range office.
The forest department arranged for Shivlal Baghel to be taken to the district hospital where he is receiving medical care. His relative Fateh Singh said Shivlal has multiple serious wounds but his condition is stable due to timely treatment.
As soon as the tracking team and officials from Madhav Tiger Reserve reached the village, the villagers surrounded them expressing their displeasure. The locals accused the forest department of negligence in monitoring the tigress, which allowed her to come close to the village and attack.
Villagers stated that if the monitoring team had been alert and the warning systems stronger, this incident could have been prevented. They also mentioned that the tigress’ movements near the village and fields had been noticed for several days and complaints had been made to the forest department, but no effective action was taken.
On 27 December, a tigress approximately three years old was brought from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and released in the middle range of Madhav Tiger Reserve in Shivpuri. Following this, the total number of tigers in the reserve increased to eight.
