
New Chandigarh, August 2: The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League was officially launched on Sunday at the PCA International Cricket Stadium. This league aims to provide a platform for emerging cricketers from Punjab.
The inaugural tournament will take place from August 30 to September 13, featuring six franchises competing in a round-robin format across 27 matches. Several prominent cricketers from Punjab will participate, including Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, T20 opener Abhishek Sharma, fast bowler Gurnoor Barad, wicketkeeper-batsman Prabhsimran Singh, and all-rounder Ramandeep Singh.
The league was launched by Gurmeet Singh Meet Hair, Secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), and President Amarjeet Singh Mehta, in the presence of Gill and Arshdeep. During the ceremony, the official logo of the tournament was also unveiled.
Gill emphasized that the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League serves as an ideal platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent and represent Punjab and India. He stated, “Punjab has always produced great cricketers. I believe this league will help discover many more talents. I congratulate the Punjab Cricket Association for this fantastic initiative and wish the league great success.”
Meet Hair remarked that Punjab has always been one of the largest contributors to cricket in India. The state has produced legends like Lala Amarnath and Yuvraj Singh, along with current international stars such as Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, and Harmanpreet Kaur.
He added, “The depth of talent in Punjab is unparalleled, and we are confident that the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will become one of the premier domestic T20 leagues in the country.”
Describing the league as a visionary initiative by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Meet Hair stated that the tournament aims to provide a professional platform for the state’s emerging cricketers to showcase their talent and take the next step in their careers.
He noted, “This league will give young cricketers a chance to display their skills alongside international stars. We are grateful to all players, the Punjab Cricket Association, and everyone involved in this initiative. We are confident that the league will be very successful.”
PCA President Amarjeet Singh Mehta mentioned that this competition will allow emerging cricketers to share the dressing room with international stars and demonstrate their abilities on a larger stage.
Mehta stated, “The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Punjab cricket and strengthening it further.”
During the launch ceremony, PCA Secretary Meet Hair, President Amarjeet Mehta, Vice President Deepak Bali, Treasurer Sunil Gupta, and Joint Secretary Siddhant Sharma also honored the franchise owners and players. The auction for the first edition will take place on August 9. Six franchises from Amritsar, Fazilka, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Mohali, and Bathinda will participate in the auction to form their teams.
Each franchise will have a purse value of 4.5 million rupees. The marquee player will be priced at 1 million rupees, while the base price for an icon player is set at 150,000 rupees. The base prices for Punjab’s first-class, under-23, under-19, and district players are set at 100,000 rupees, 75,000 rupees, 50,000 rupees, and 20,000 rupees, respectively. Each franchise can have a maximum of 20 players.
