Beijing, 2 January 2026: On the occasion of the New Year 2026, astronauts of China’s Shenzhou-21 mission stationed at the country’s space station sent their warm greetings to the nation through a recorded video message. Chang Lu, Wu Fei, and Chang Hongchang wished the people a year filled with brightness along the galaxy’s paths and smooth journeys ahead.

Commander Chang Lu, who has now welcomed the New Year twice from space, expressed that the strength of the motherland is the foundation and backdrop for their space missions. While orbiting the Earth, he said, viewing the vast land and lights of their country makes him recall the lines of a song, “I praise every mountain and every river.”

Flight engineer Wu Fei, on her first spaceflight, shared that the crew recently completed a new round of inspections of the space station. This responsibility ensures the smooth functioning of their “space home.”

Payload specialist Chang Hongchang extended his first “star-filled blessing” from space, conveying heartfelt New Year wishes to all citizens and hoping all their desires come true.

The Shenzhou-21 manned spacecraft was launched on the night of 31 October 2025 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu province, northwest China. Since then, the crew joined with the Shenzhou-20 team to conduct China’s seventh “space rendezvous” in its space history.

On 9 December, the Shenzhou-21 crew successfully completed their first spacewalk, with Chang Lu becoming the first Chinese astronaut to walk in space again after two and a half years, and Wu Fei becoming the youngest Chinese astronaut to perform a spacewalk.

With the start of the new year, the Shenzhou-21 team plans to continue additional spacewalk activities, science experiments, and technical tests along with their scientific payloads.
