Jammu, July 1: Sheikh Bashir, provincial secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, has welcomed a letter signed by 117 prominent individuals advocating for the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan. He stated that initiating dialogue between the two nations is a positive step. War is not a permanent solution to any problem, and all disputes can only be resolved through conversation.
In a discussion, Sheikh Bashir noted, “The relationship between India and Pakistan has been tense for a long time, significantly affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. For the past 36 years, Jammu and Kashmir has endured terrorism and violence. People had hoped that the formation of a BJP government at the center would lead to resolutions of long-pending issues, but the expected changes have not materialized.”
He added, “The appeal by 117 intellectuals and prominent citizens to improve relations and initiate dialogue between the two countries is commendable. If peace and dialogue are pursued even after conditions resembling war, it should be viewed positively. The Russia-Ukraine war resulted in significant loss of life and property, yet ultimately, a solution is being sought through dialogue.”
Sheikh Bashir also referenced ongoing tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, emphasizing that military action cannot provide a permanent solution to any dispute. Global experiences indicate that dialogue is the most effective path to resolving conflicts. He mentioned having previously heard RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat speak about the necessity of dialogue between India and Pakistan. If issues can be resolved through conversation, efforts should be made in that direction.
He urged the central government to clarify what concrete steps have been taken to improve India-Pakistan relations over the past 11 years. He also remarked that after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not secure a full majority, and the government was formed with the support of allied parties.
Regarding the Amarnath Yatra, Sheikh Bashir stated, “This pilgrimage is extremely important for Jammu and Kashmir, both spiritually and economically. The people of the region welcome the Yatra, and the administration has made extensive security arrangements. The Amarnath Yatra boosts tourism and the local economy, providing thousands with employment and income opportunities. Everyone should welcome this Yatra and contribute to its successful organization.”
