New York, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : American President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi highlighted the strength of the US-Japan alliance during their recent meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The two leaders emphasized the growing cooperation between their nations, particularly in the realm of economic security.
Trump opened the bilateral meeting by praising Takaiichi, referring to her as a friend and noting her significant contributions as one of Japan’s prominent leaders. He stated, “She has done an excellent job. I always keep an eye on her numbers, and Japan’s industry is performing remarkably well. The country is thriving, showing substantial improvement.”
He expressed his honor in working alongside her, saying, “It’s a privilege to be with her. We have come to know each other very well, and she will prove to be an outstanding Prime Minister.” Trump also commended the Japanese officials accompanying Takaiichi, acknowledging their strength and wisdom.
In response, Takaiichi thanked Trump through a translator, expressing her appreciation for his strong support of the US-Japan partnership, especially as security challenges intensify in Asia. She reiterated her gratitude for Trump’s commitment to the alliance, particularly in light of the increasingly difficult security landscape in recent years.
The meeting aimed to send a strong message about the resilience of the US-Japan relationship. Takaiichi remarked, “I want to use this opportunity to show the world how strong our alliance is. Today, another meeting is taking place here at the UN headquarters with Donald Trump.”
She also briefed Trump on recent changes in her Cabinet, noting that out of 18 ministers, 10 were newly appointed. However, she emphasized that key officials overseeing foreign policy, finance, economic affairs, and defense remained in their positions. This continuity, she argued, would facilitate direct working relationships with their American counterparts and advance coordination between Washington and Tokyo.
Takaiichi pointed out that economic security is an increasingly significant aspect of the bilateral relationship. She specifically mentioned sectors like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and critical minerals, which have become vital to both countries’ strategic and industrial policies.
“Thanks to our leadership, our mutual economic security cooperation in areas such as AI, semiconductors, and critical minerals is continually advancing,” she stated. She hinted that several key issues would be discussed in private conversations before leaving the press room.
The US and Japan have been linked by a mutual cooperation and security treaty since 1960. Washington has long regarded this alliance as crucial for its security needs in Asia and for stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Both nations collaborate on various platforms, including the United Nations, G7, G20, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Their partnership extends across security, trade, technology, and regional and global issues.
