Thiruvananthapuram, April 1: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor expressed confidence on Wednesday that a strong wave is building in favor of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala.
While campaigning for UDF candidate Madhusoodanan in the Ranni Assembly constituency, Tharoor stated that he has been actively campaigning across the state since March 20 and has observed increasing support for the UDF among voters.
“I have been campaigning since March 20, and I can tell you that I see a real, tremendous wave forming in favor of the UDF. The momentum is with us. I have campaigned for 36 candidates so far. I don’t think they will all win, but they are certainly making an impact on the voters,” he said.
Highlighting key election issues, Tharoor pointed to growing concerns over the migration of youth from Kerala, calling it a significant challenge that requires immediate attention.
“This is a major issue at this time. Our youth are leaving the state for other states and countries. We want to create development that keeps them here, in our country, and prepares them for the future they deserve,” he added.
Addressing party workers and supporters during the campaign, Tharoor emphasized the necessity of a UDF government for the future of Kerala and its youth. He mentioned that the coalition aims to create conditions where young people do not have to leave the state in search of job opportunities abroad.
He asserted that if given the chance to govern, the UDF would generate more job opportunities and improve the living standards in line with the aspirations of the younger generation. Tharoor also shed light on the five-point guarantee announced by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, stating it has the potential to bring about significant societal change.
The Congress MP supported Gandhi’s comments regarding alleged political equations among opposition parties in the state. Without naming any party directly, Tharoor hinted at possible collusion due to electoral calculations.
“Rahul Gandhi has made his point very strongly, and I will not contradict my party leader. The truth is that there are many reasons for their similarities. The leftists know that anti-incumbency votes will be cast. If they see that anti-incumbency votes are split and some are going to the BJP, they will be very happy. So, to some extent, there is definitely some collusion going on there,” he stated.
Adopting an optimistic stance on Gandhi’s campaigning impact, Tharoor noted that voters are seeking a change in governance and leadership.
“Rahul Gandhi will have a significant impact here. People are genuinely waiting to hear voices from all sides that speak about the future. They are tired of the past, the misgovernance, and frankly, the incompetence and corruption we have witnessed in the state over the past decade. Now we need new thinking, new leadership, and new dynamics,” he remarked.
The Ranni Assembly constituency is witnessing an intriguing contest, where the UDF hopes to capitalize on the growing public discontent to translate this wave into electoral victory.
