New Delhi, August 12: The Bangladesh cricket team is set to tour Australia for a two-match Test series, with the first Test scheduled to begin on August 13. As a Test team, Bangladesh is perceived as significantly weaker than Australia. This was evident in a recent warm-up match where Bangladesh faced a heavy innings defeat against a Cricket Australia XI. However, Bangladesh has previously triumphed over Australia in Test cricket.
In 2017, Australia toured Bangladesh for a two-match Test series. In the first match held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh stunned Australia with a remarkable victory.
Batting first, Bangladesh scored 260 runs, with Tamim Iqbal contributing 71 runs and Shakib Al Hasan making a notable 84 runs.
In their first innings, Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 217, gaining a crucial lead of 43 runs. For Australia, Matt Renshaw scored 45 runs, while Ashton Agar added 41 runs.
Shakib Al Hasan was instrumental with the ball, taking 5 wickets, while Mehidy Hasan claimed 3 wickets.
Bangladesh’s second innings ended at 221 runs, with Tamim Iqbal again shining with the bat, scoring 78 runs. Nathan Lyon was the standout bowler for Australia, taking 6 wickets.
With a first-innings lead of 43 runs, Bangladesh set Australia a target of 265 runs for victory. Despite David Warner’s century (112 runs), Australia was bowled out for 244, losing the match by 20 runs. Shakib Al Hasan took 5 wickets in the second innings as well.
Shakib was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 89 runs and taking a total of 10 wickets.
This victory remains Bangladesh’s only win in six Tests against Australia, with the team having lost the other five encounters. The upcoming Test series against Australia will surely boost Bangladesh’s confidence, drawing on their sole victory.
