Bogotá, August 12: The death toll from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday has risen to 188, with 1,677 individuals reported injured. Among the deceased, 95 fatalities and 997 injuries were reported from Cali, while Pereira confirmed 79 deaths and 278 injuries. This information was provided by the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales).
According to the news agency Xinhua, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella previously stated that the earthquake has damaged 1,575 homes. Additionally, the infrastructure of six airports has been affected, leading to a suspension of commercial flight services. In light of the situation’s severity, the government declared a national disaster on Monday.
The Colombian Geological Service reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:34 AM local time in western Colombia. Its epicenter was near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, with a recorded depth of 96 kilometers.
The organization stated that it is in continuous contact with the capitals of the affected departments. They are working alongside local mayors and their teams to monitor the situation, assess the damage, and identify the most urgent relief needs.
Leaders from around the world have expressed their condolences and support for the people of Colombia. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Colombia can rely on France’s friendship and support during this challenging time. He also expressed solidarity with those affected by the earthquake.
On the social media platform X, Macron wrote, “I express my deep condolences to the people of Colombia on behalf of France amid this terrible earthquake. My sympathies are with the victims, their families, the injured, and all those affected by this disaster. We stand with the rescue teams and all those bravely helping those in need. During this difficult time, Colombia can count on our friendship and support.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also extended his support and solidarity to the people of Colombia, urging people worldwide to come forward to assist those affected by this disaster.
