New Delhi, August 12: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. This meeting occurred just a day after Trivedi’s courtesy visit with Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Tariq Rahman, in Dhaka.
The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh shared on social media platform X, stating, “High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to seek guidance on creatively strengthening the multifaceted and long-standing bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh with a people-centric approach.”
During his meeting with Tariq Rahman on Monday, Trivedi conveyed best wishes from Prime Minister Modi. He also expressed India’s desire to work positively, creatively, and with a forward-looking perspective alongside the Bangladeshi government and its people.
Following the meeting, the Indian High Commission reported that both leaders exchanged views on various issues of mutual interest and discussed measures to enhance India-Bangladesh relations with a people-centric approach.
Analysts believe this meeting signifies a “positive change” following recent diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Reports indicate that the cordial discussions suggest both parties aim to prioritize broader India-Bangladesh relations, moving past recent differences.
A report from Bangladesh’s Daily Sun noted, “The recent tensions in Bangladesh-India relations are a concern for both governments, but there is no need to escalate it into a crisis. Geographical proximity, history, trade, rivers, security, and deep people-to-people ties connect the two neighboring countries in ways that cannot be overlooked.”
The report also mentioned sharp reactions in Dhaka to a recent address by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to journalists in New Delhi. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs clarified that it had no role in Hasina’s recent virtual media interaction and does not endorse any statements made during the event, particularly those related to the legitimately formed government in Dhaka.
Furthermore, since taking office, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi has adopted a balanced and dialogue-based approach. He has emphasized the need to resolve bilateral challenges through mutual understanding and expressed optimism about advancing India-Bangladesh relations.
The report also highlighted that the invitation for Tariq Rahman to visit India could present another significant opportunity for high-level dialogue between the two countries, including an invitation to participate in the BRICS summit in New Delhi this September.
