Severe Heatwave Hits Northern India, IMD Issues Alert

New Delhi, April 26: Northern India is currently grappling with an intense heatwave. Temperatures in various regions have soared well above normal, causing significant discomfort for residents. In the national capital, New Delhi, temperatures have reached record levels, raising health concerns among the populace.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature in Delhi hit 44.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday, marking the highest temperature recorded this season. On Sunday, temperatures remained above 40 degrees Celsius, leading to persistent heatwave conditions. Reports indicate that hot winds are sweeping through several areas, prompting authorities to issue a ‘Yellow Alert.’

The IMD has warned that this heatwave will persist in northwestern and central India until April 28. States like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. Additionally, central Indian states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Vidarbha region are also facing extreme heat.

In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, temperatures reached 45.2 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded in the state so far. A severe heat alert has been issued for 32 districts, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

The weather department has also indicated that parts of southern India, particularly Kerala and Mahe, may experience heatwave-like conditions in the coming days.

In light of the rising temperatures, the IMD has advised the public to exercise caution. Residents are urged to avoid going out in the sun between 12 PM and 3 PM, stay hydrated, and wear loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothing. The use of hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses is also recommended.

Those working outdoors are advised to keep a wet cloth on their heads and necks. Additionally, leaving children and pets in parked vehicles is strongly discouraged. Experts warn that if these conditions persist, the heat could become even more dangerous, posing serious health risks to individuals.
