New Delhi, May 17: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of extreme heat conditions in Delhi and several parts of Northern India over the next few days, with temperatures expected to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
The IMD stated that the plains of Northwest and Central India are likely to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for several days this week. A severe forecast has been issued for the northern, northwestern, and central plains of India, indicating that relief from the heat is not expected in these regions.
The rising temperatures in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have already begun to show effects, with the mercury climbing above normal levels. On Saturday, the maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung, which represents the city’s weather, was 40 degrees Celsius, slightly above the normal by 0.4 degrees.
Several areas in Northwest India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, are expected to see a gradual increase in temperatures throughout the week. The weather department predicts a steady rise of 3-5 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures across many parts of Northwest India by May 21, with little change expected on May 22-23.
The IMD further indicated that heatwave conditions are likely in Rajasthan from May 17 to 23, while parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and some areas of Delhi may experience a spike in temperatures from May 18 to 23. Heatwave conditions are also anticipated in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from May 17 to 21.
Some regions of Uttar Pradesh may face moderate to severe heat conditions next week, while the southern part of Telangana will also be affected by extreme heat.
The meteorological department has forecasted moderate rainfall with strong winds and hail in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on May 17 and 18.
In the northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, thunderstorms with rain are expected on May 18, while heavy rainfall is anticipated in Arunachal Pradesh during the same period.
