Bhopal, May 21: Madhya Pradesh is currently experiencing extreme heat, with maximum temperatures significantly exceeding normal levels across the state. A heat alert has been issued for a total of 37 districts in the coming days.
On May 20, maximum temperatures in the western regions of the state ranged between 42 to 44 degrees Celsius, while eastern Madhya Pradesh recorded temperatures between 43 to 45 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature was noted in Khajuraho, reaching 47.4 degrees Celsius, raising concerns among both officials and residents.
Official reports of heat conditions have been recorded in Satna, Khajuraho, Mandla, Naogaon, and Damoh. The India Meteorological Department’s weather center in Bhopal has warned that on Thursday, maximum temperatures across most parts of the state are expected to remain between 43 to 45 degrees Celsius, with severe heat likely to persist in several districts.
The 37 districts under heat alert include Bhopal, Raisen, Vidisha, Sehore, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Ratlam, Shajapur, Agar Malwa, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Morena, Shyopur, Shahdol, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Mandla, Katni, Umaria, Balaghat, Dindori, Anuppur, Mauganj, Satna, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari.
The heat index is also expected to remain high, increasing discomfort and health risks for the population. Meteorologists attribute the current conditions to ongoing drought and the absence of any significant weather systems that could provide relief in the near future.
High daytime temperatures are likely to make outdoor activities particularly challenging during the hottest hours of the afternoon. Health officials have issued detailed advisories urging citizens to take necessary precautions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight between 12 PM and 4 PM, and wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing, along with hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses.
People are encouraged to avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest parts of the day and to frequently rest in shaded or cool areas. Authorities have called for vigilance, especially among the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
With no signs of a temperature drop in the immediate future, officials urge the public to closely monitor weather updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities to ensure their safety during this extreme heat wave.
