Bhopal, 18 December: Madhya Pradesh is experiencing a sharp drop in temperature, falling below 5 degrees Celsius in several areas. The state health department has issued an advisory with precautions to protect citizens from the cold wave.

Temperatures continue to decline across the state. Rajgarh and Indore have recorded temperatures between 4 and 5 degrees Celsius. Large parts of Madhya Pradesh are seeing temperatures under 10 degrees. The cold is expected to intensify in the coming days, with people increasingly needing bonfires and other warming measures at night.

Tarun Rathi, Commissioner of Public Health and Medical Education, has directed all medical college heads, chief medical and health officers, civil surgeons, and hospital superintendents to inform field workers and the public about cold wave symptoms and preventive measures.

Typically, December and January bring severe cold waves to the state. Minimum temperatures in many areas drop to 5-7 degrees Celsius or lower, posing health risks. The health department warns that extreme cold may lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and, in severe cases, fatalities.

Vulnerable groups during cold waves include elderly people above 65 years, children under 5, patients with heart and respiratory diseases, homeless persons, workers at construction sites and open areas, roadside dwellers, and small business workers.

The advisory recommends wearing sufficient warm clothing in layers, covering the head, neck, hands, and feet well with caps, mufflers, and socks. Use waterproof footwear and consume warm liquids such as tea and soup. A balanced diet rich in vitamin C fruits and vegetables is advised. Avoid exposure to cold winds, stay indoors as much as possible, and refrain from unnecessary travel.

Special care should be taken for children, the elderly, those living alone, and helpless individuals. People are advised to stock up on essential medicines, fuel, drinking water, and other necessities in advance. In case of cold-related health issues, immediate medical consultation and hospital contact are crucial.
