Imphal, August 9: Security forces in Manipur have apprehended seven militants linked to banned insurgent groups during various joint operations over the past 24 hours. Authorities reported the arrests and the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and other incriminating materials on Sunday.
A senior police official stated that the arrests were made in Imphal West and Bishnupur districts through coordinated efforts between Manipur police and other central forces.
The detained militants are associated with the banned groups, including the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), People’s Liberation Army (PLA), its political wing Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
According to officials, the arrested militants were allegedly involved in various illegal activities such as kidnapping, extortion, and recruitment of youth for banned organizations. Security personnel recovered several incriminating documents, receipts for extortion, cash, stamps, letterheads from banned organizations, and other materials from the militants.
In three separate joint operations in Imphal East and Imphal West districts, security forces also seized a significant amount of weapons and ammunition.
The recovered arms include 11 single-barrel breach-loading shotguns, six pistols, one anti-riot gun, 37 powerful hand grenades, one white phosphorus grenade, an IED weighing approximately 4.6 kilograms, six empty magazines for SLR, INSAS, and .303 rifles, 86 assorted ammunition, six anti-riot shells, one vehicle set, two handheld sets, 162 live cartridges of various calibers, 26 empty cases, and two stun shells.
Additionally, some military uniforms and equipment were recovered, including a bulletproof iron plate, bulletproof jacket covers, ammunition chargers, communication sets, and various other items.
Meanwhile, security forces, including the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Manipur police, are conducting extensive anti-insurgency operations across the state, focusing on border areas, mixed-population regions, and other sensitive locations. These operations include search missions and efforts to maintain control over the areas.
To enhance security, 111 checkpoints have been established to monitor the movement of militants, anti-social elements, and suspicious vehicles in the valley and hilly districts.
Security forces are also providing armed protection to trucks and other vehicles transporting essential goods along the strategically important Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37). Strict security measures and convoy protection are in place to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of passenger and freight vehicles through sensitive sections of the highway.
