Guwahati, June 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior section engineer from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Silchar, Assam, on charges of bribery. The accused official was assigned to the Civil and Works department.
According to a press release issued by the CBI on Sunday, the agency registered a First Information Report (FIR) in this case on June 13. The investigation revealed that a contractor had a pending bill of approximately ₹2 million for work already completed, which required approval from the accused engineer.
It is alleged that on June 12, 2026, when the contractor approached the senior section engineer to expedite the bill’s approval, the official demanded a bribe of one percent of the total pending amount for processing the payment. This bribe was reported to be ₹20,000.
Following the complaint, the CBI took swift action. A team from the agency caught the accused red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the ₹20,000 bribe from the contractor. The accused has been taken into custody and will be presented in a competent court in Guwahati on June 14.
The investigation agency also stated that searches are ongoing at the residential premises of the accused, and a thorough investigation is underway.
Previously, in a significant anti-corruption operation, a CBI team from Jabalpur arrested Abhayankar Sharma, an assistant manager at the Central Bank of India in Shahdol, for accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. The accused had demanded this amount in exchange for granting permission to operate a banking kiosk. This arrest occurred on June 11.
