
New Delhi, May 11: A grand celebration of National Technology Day 2026 was held at the historic Vice Regal Lodge, organized by Indraprastha Science Bharti in collaboration with Delhi University. Esteemed scientists, policymakers, educators, technology experts, students, and industry representatives gathered to discuss the vital role of science and technology in nation-building and social transformation.
During the inaugural session, the booklet for India’s largest online science talent search exam, ‘Vidyaarthi Vigyan Manthan,’ was also launched.
On this occasion, Prof. Avinash Chandra Pandey, President of Indraprastha Science Bharti and Director of the Inter-University Accelerator Centre, emphasized the importance of scientific innovation in creating a self-reliant India. National General Secretary of Science Bharti, Vivekanand Pai, highlighted the need to align scientific progress with national development priorities.
A special video message from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was also presented. She mentioned the plan to establish the ‘Delhi Science, Technology, and Innovation Council’ aimed at developing local innovations to address urban issues. Chief Guest, NITI Aayog member Prof. Govardhan Das, shed light on India’s technological advancements and the role of innovation-based governance.
One of the highlights of the event was a panel discussion titled ‘Delhi as a World-Class Capital: A Global Model.’ Experts including Prof. M.M. Tripathi, Prof. Ranjana Agarwal, Prof. A.K. Bhagi, and Dr. Sachin Ghude participated, discussing topics such as sustainable urban development, climate adaptation, technological infrastructure, and scientific policymaking for future-ready cities.
Former Director of the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre, Chandrashekhar Gourinath Karhadkar, delivered a special lecture on ‘India’s Journey from Scientific Excellence to Social Impact in Nuclear Technology.’
Another significant panel discussion titled ‘Crystalizing Progress: The Role of the Delhi Science and Technology Council’ featured prominent scientists and policymakers, including Prof. Shekhar C. Mande, Dr. Anil Kothari, and Dr. Anita Agarwal. They emphasized strengthening science communication, innovation ecosystems, and technology-based social empowerment.
In the closing session, Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, Praveen Ramdas from Science Bharti, and Prof. Yogesh Singh shared their insights.
The closing address was delivered by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts among the education sector, government, and industry to propel India towards global technological leadership. He stated that sustainable development and self-reliance can only be achieved through a robust research ecosystem, visionary policymaking, and long-term institutional commitment.
The Lieutenant Governor posted on social media platform ‘X,’ expressing his happiness at participating in the National Technology Day celebration at Delhi University’s Vice Regal Lodge. He emphasized the need to integrate scientific innovation into urban governance, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India. He noted that technology should address real challenges to improve the lives of people in Delhi, whether through AI-based health monitoring or ecological restoration. Engaging with researchers and students contributing to building a strong and self-reliant new India was truly inspiring.
