Saudi Arabia Shoots Down Three Drones Intruding from Iraqi Airspace

Riyadh, May 18: The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Defense has reported the successful interception and destruction of three drones that entered its airspace from Iraqi territory. The ministry has issued a warning, stating that it will take all necessary military measures to respond to any attempts of aggression.

Major General Turki Al-Maliki, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, confirmed that the drones were neutralized after breaching the country’s airspace.

In his statement, Al-Maliki emphasized that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to retaliate at the appropriate time and place. He assured that the kingdom would implement all operational measures necessary to counter any aggression against its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.

Last month, the Saudi Foreign Ministry summoned the Iraqi ambassador in Riyadh. The ministry cited the use of drones launched from Iraqi territory as a reason for ongoing attacks and threats targeting the kingdom and other Gulf nations.

Additionally, Saudi Arabia condemned a recent drone attack on the United Arab Emirates, which resulted in a fire outside the perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant.

The UAE’s Ministry of Defense reported that it successfully intercepted two drones, while a third collided with a power generator near the nuclear facility in the Al Dhafra region. The ministry noted that these drones originated from the western border but did not provide further details.

The ongoing conflict between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran has contributed to instability in Saudi Arabia. Tensions have escalated since February when the U.S. and Israel initiated attacks against Iran. In recent months, the Saudi Ministry has announced the interception and destruction of several drones attempting to enter its airspace.

In response to the attacks by the U.S. and Israel, Iran has also taken action, targeting Israel and U.S. allied nations in the Gulf, including the UAE, and has even closed the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire was brokered with Pakistan’s mediation on April 8, but no permanent agreement was reached during talks in Islamabad. Subsequently, U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
