Bangkok, May 17: After clinching a silver medal at the Thailand Open on Sunday, India’s top men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have decided to withdraw from the upcoming Malaysia Masters. Following their impressive performance in the Thailand Open finals, the duo is now carefully managing their schedule.
Following their silver medal achievement, the Indian pair announced they would not compete in Malaysia. They plan to return for the Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia legs of the tour.
After the match, Rankireddy stated, “We are not playing in Malaysia. We will be competing in Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia.”
This decision comes after Satwik and Chirag regained their rhythm and confidence during their campaign in Thailand. However, they faced defeat in the gold medal match against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, losing 12-21, 23-25.
While the first game slipped away quickly, the Indian pair made a strong comeback in the second game, saving four championship points, but ultimately lost by a narrow margin. Shetty acknowledged that the fast-paced conditions made it challenging for them to settle in at the start.
Rankireddy admitted that their confidence had waned in recent months but felt that they were gradually returning to their best form. He said, “Except for today, the way we played, I think we are regaining our old rhythm. We need to have more trust and confidence in ourselves rather than playing 50-50 on the court. I believe that when we step onto the court, our confidence is at 50 percent. But a year ago, it was always at 90 percent. Now, we are regaining that confidence. I am very happy with how we played this week. I think it’s more of a mental game than physical, but things are starting to turn in our favor. I believe that sooner or later, we will be part of the winning team instead of just being in second place, and I am happy.”
Shetty echoed this sentiment, citing India’s recent Thomas Cup campaign as a turning point that helped the pair regain confidence in their game. He remarked, “I think we played well at the beginning of the year. Gradually, we are regaining our confidence, especially after the Thomas Cup. Although we lost today, I believe we can move forward.”
