Sant Community Protests UGC’s New Guidelines, Appeals to Government

Varanasi: The recently introduced guidelines by the University Grants Commission (UGC) have sparked widespread criticism, with claims that they discriminate against Hindu society and upper-caste youth. Concerns have also been raised over the absence of provisions to take action against false allegations under the new rules.

The discontent has now found a voice within the Sant community. Swami Jitendranand Saraswati, General Secretary of the All India Sant Committee, has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding action against those responsible for framing these guidelines.

Swami Jitendranand Saraswati stated, “These new regulations are discriminatory and aim to divide the Hindu community into various sections. Our committee does not accept these guidelines and strongly opposes them. The Constitution guarantees equality to all, but does the UGC’s new framework uphold this principle?”

He further added, “The youth of the nation are being instilled with feelings of discrimination to such an extent that even false complaints may go unpunished in the future. Being born into an upper caste should not be considered a crime.”

Expressing strong condemnation, he said, “Those who have drafted these divisive guidelines, whether the UGC chairman or officials from the Ministry of Education, should resign immediately. Strict action must be taken against those who seek to divide Hindus. Our country functions on the principles of one nation, one mind, and one life.”

It is important to note that the UGC’s changes, introduced this year under the Equity in Higher Education Regulations, aim to reduce discrimination against Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), women, and differently-abled students, alongside ensuring fair inquiry mechanisms. Two separate centres and committees have been established to oversee these regulations. However, these measures have met with opposition from various quarters.
