National Farmers Fair: Agriculture is Not Just a Livelihood, But the Soul of Farmers, Says Ramkripal Yadav

Bhagalpur, March 18: The second day of the three-day National Farmers’ Fair and Exhibition 2026, held at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, witnessed a large turnout of farmers, agricultural entrepreneurs, students, and agriculture enthusiasts. The atmosphere was vibrant with enthusiasm, innovation, and knowledge exchange.

The day began with the arrival of dignitaries, followed by the inauguration, exhibition tours, publication releases, product launches, award distributions, and technical sessions.

Notable attendees included Bihar’s Rural Development Minister and Transport Minister Shravan Kumar, Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav, Bhagalpur MP Ajay Kumar Mandal, Bihar Legislative Council member Dr. N.K. Yadav, and NABARD’s Chief General Manager Gautam Kumar Singh, among others. All guests were welcomed with vermilion plants and shawls.

During the fair, the dignitaries toured various exhibits, including a flower exhibition showcasing an array of beautiful blooms, and inspected the garden and agriculture pavilions themed ‘Solutions through Research.’ They appreciated the research conducted by scientists at Bihar Agricultural University and explored various millet-based products.

A special highlight of the fair was ongoing research on nilgai (blue bull). Guests observed behavioral changes in nilgai, noting its increasingly sociable behavior, which could significantly reduce future human-wildlife conflicts.

Agriculture Minister Ramkripal Yadav addressed the gathering, stating, “Agriculture is not merely a means of livelihood; it is the soul of farmers and the pride of our nation. With 76% of Bihar’s population engaged in agriculture, the prosperity of farmers is the foundation of the state’s prosperity.” He praised the university’s vice-chancellor and his team for organizing the event successfully.

In his presidential address, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar emphasized the need for advanced technology and agricultural enterprises to enhance farmers’ income. He highlighted that research-based solutions and training are essential for sustainable development amid climate change challenges. He commended the university’s efforts in this direction.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) D.R. Singh remarked, “The development of states is crucial for national progress, and Bihar’s development is only possible through the advancement of its farmers. Our scientists are continuously working on developing new technologies.”

During the event, awards were presented to agricultural entrepreneurs, including Indu Kumari from Khagaria, Rinku Devi from Banka, Arjun Mandal from Jamui, Utkarsh Singh from Rohtas, Chandan Kumar from Bhagalpur, Rajesh Kumar from Munger, and other progressive farmers.

In a unique segment, students from BAU presented a ramp walk featuring GI (Geographical Indication) products, showcasing items like fox nuts, Zardalu mangoes, Magahi paan, Katarni rice, lychee, and potential GI products such as Thekua and Khaja.

An AI-based film titled ‘Advanced Agriculture, Bright Bihar’ produced by the university was also launched. Innovative scientists, including Dr. Ahmar Aftab, Dr. R.V.P. Nirala, Dr. Shivanath Das, Dr. Shahida Bano, Dr. Chandan Kumar Panda, Dr. Sarita Nahakpam, Dr. Aditya Kumar, and Dr. Anil Kumar, were honored for their contributions.

Dr. Deepak Patel received the prestigious Dr. G. Trivedi Award. The welcome address was delivered by Research Director Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, while the vote of thanks was presented by Director of Extension Education Dr. S.K. Pathak.

Winners of the ‘Makhana Bolega Aur Bihar Gaaega’ competition were also announced, recognizing the best songs, poems, and statements about fox nuts.

A major attraction on the second day was the animal exhibition, featuring various dog breeds—German Shepherds, Pomeranians, Dobermans, Labradors—as well as rabbits, chickens, pigeons, and other animals. Himalayan and Persian cats also drew attention. A goat cart, reminiscent of a bullock cart, captivated visitors, along with well-bred horses.

In the evening, a cultural program was held, showcasing performances by university students that captivated the audience.
