Mumbai, August 15: Saif Ali Khan, now regarded as one of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema, faced rejection early in his career. In 1992, he was removed from his debut film, “Bekhudi,” directed by Rahul Rawail, after the first shooting schedule. He was labeled unprofessional and replaced by Kamal Sadanah. Reports suggest that the director asked Saif to choose between his girlfriend, Amrita Singh, and the film, a condition he refused. The director later denied these claims, attributing Saif’s removal to his irresponsible behavior.
Saif faced allegations of arriving on set under the influence of alcohol, which deeply affected his initial confidence. His English accent, stemming from his education, also drew criticism. He often heard remarks about his long hair and physique, which did not fit the traditional action hero mold.
Born on August 16, 1970, to former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and renowned actress Sharmila Tagore, Saif grew up under the weight of his family’s legacy. He was known for his playful nature during childhood and attended Lawrence School in India before moving to the prestigious Winchester College in England.
His Bollywood journey began in 1993 with films like “Parampara” and “Aashik Awara,” gradually shaping his image as a ‘chocolate boy.’ The 2001 film “Dil Chahta Hai,” directed by Farhan Akhtar, catapulted him to stardom as Samir Mulchandani in urban romantic comedies.
Despite commercial success, a pivotal moment came when his mother advised him to choose more interesting and profound roles. This advice sparked a transformation in Saif, leading him to portray Langda Tyagi in the 2006 film “Omkara,” based on Shakespeare’s “Othello.” His dedication was evident as he practiced the film’s challenging rural dialogues while vacationing in the Maldives. This role redefined his image as a serious actor.
After “Omkara,” Saif never looked back. He made waves in the Indian OTT space with his role as Sartaj Singh in “Sacred Games” in 2018. His portrayal of Udaybhan Singh Rathore in the 2020 film “Tanhaji” also garnered significant acclaim.
In addition to acting, Saif is a producer. He co-founded Illuminati Films with Dinesh Vijan in 2009, producing several successful films. His production house made cinematic history with “Go Goa Gone,” India’s first zombie-comedy, released on May 10, 2013.
Saif’s film “Love Aaj Kal,” released on July 31, 2009, was a hit, followed by the successful “Cocktail” on July 13, 2012, and the blockbuster “Tanhaji” on January 10, 2020.
Saif married actress Amrita Singh in October 1991, but the couple divorced in 2004. He later married actress Kareena Kapoor in October 2012. Beyond cinema, he enjoys reading and playing the guitar in his spare time.
In 2010, the Indian government honored him with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award. However, Saif contemplated returning it, believing many senior artists were more deserving. He eventually accepted it, influenced by his father’s advice that no one should refuse the Indian government.
Saif’s recent projects include the action thriller “Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins,” released on Netflix on April 25, 2025, and the crime drama “Kartavya,” released on May 15, 2026. Additionally, his much-anticipated action film “Devra: Part 1” was released in 2024.
