Miami, May 1: Sahith Theegala delivered an impressive performance in the first round of the Cadillac Championship, securing a spot in the top 10. He finished with a score of 3-under 69, tying for ninth place. Cameron Young leads the tournament with an outstanding score of 8-under 64, leaving Theegala four shots behind.
Akshay Bhatia also had a strong start, finishing with a score of 2-under 70, placing him in a tie for 15th. Indo-Canadian Sudarshan Yelamraju scored 74, currently tied for 52nd. The tournament is being held at the challenging ‘Blue Monster’ course at Trump National Doral.
Theegala made an aggressive start, recording three birdies in his first five holes, quickly climbing the leaderboard. Although his momentum slowed midway through the round, he maintained his composure and finished below par. His scorecard included birdies on the par-4 second, par-3 third, and par-4 fifth holes, as well as on the par-5 tenth and par-3 fifteenth holes.
Despite losing some shots on the 11th and 13th holes, Theegala’s score of 69 keeps him firmly in contention. He is seeking his first win of the season, having already placed in the top 10 four times this year.
On the other hand, Bhatia was also on track for a top-10 finish but faced a setback on the final hole. After being 3-under through 17 holes, his tee shot on the 18th went straight into the water, resulting in a bogey and dropping him to a tie for 15th.
At the top of the leaderboard, Young played a flawless round without any bogeys. His key strengths were precise iron play and excellent putting, which helped him sink several long birdie putts. He holds a one-shot lead over Jordan Spieth and Alex Smalley, both at 7-under. Spieth’s round featured an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole, compensating for a few bogeys on the back nine.
World number one Scottie Scheffler had a mixed day. He started strong with three birdies in the first three holes but fell back after consecutive bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, finishing at 1-under.
Canada’s Nick Taylor is in fourth place with a score of 6-under 66, while Nico Echavarria, who won the Cognizant Classic earlier this season, began his campaign with a score of 67. Gary Woodland also remains in contention with a score of 68. Theegala will start his second round on Friday alongside Taylor Pendrith, aiming to build on his strong start.
