New Delhi, June 8: German tennis star Alexander Zverev claimed the title at the 2026 French Open on Sunday. In a thrilling men’s singles final, Zverev defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1, marking his first Grand Slam victory.
Following Zverev’s triumph, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar took to social media platform X to extend his congratulations. He wrote, “Sometimes, tennis takes a long time to reward players for their hard work. It was great to see Alexander Zverev win his first Grand Slam at Roland-Garros. I have always believed he is a special player. The match showcased incredible talent from both players, especially Flavio Cobolli.”
The final match was filled with excitement and lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes. Zverev started strong, easily taking the first set 6-1. However, Cobolli made a remarkable comeback in the second set, winning it 6-4 and putting Zverev under pressure.
Zverev regained control in the third set, but Cobolli showcased his skills in the fourth, pushing the match into a tiebreaker, which he won. In the decisive fifth set, Zverev dominated, sealing the match with a 6-1 score, finally ending his long wait for a Grand Slam title.
Previously, Zverev faced defeats in the finals of the US Open in 2020, the French Open in 2024, and again in 2025. He has, however, secured two ATP Finals titles, seven Masters 1000 titles, and an Olympic gold medal. Zverev is now the second German player to win the French Open, following Henner Henkel, who won the title in 1937.
