Houston, June 24: Cristiano Ronaldo has etched his name in football history by scoring against Uzbekistan in Portugal’s Group K match at Houston Stadium. He became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup editions.
The 41-year-old captain of Portugal achieved this milestone just six minutes into the match. With his signature style, he netted the ball from close range, giving his team an early lead. The goal came after João Cancelo delivered a low pass into the box from the right wing, which Ronaldo converted effortlessly from inside the six-yard area.
This goal marks yet another memorable moment in Ronaldo’s illustrious international career. Since making his World Cup debut at the age of 21 in Germany in 2006, he has scored in every edition he participated in (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026).
Ronaldo scored once during Portugal’s journey to the semifinals in 2006 and added another goal in both the 2010 and 2014 editions. His most successful World Cup campaign was in 2018 in Russia, where he scored four goals. He followed this up with another goal in Qatar four years later, helping Portugal reach the quarter-finals.
Despite facing criticism after a poor performance in Portugal’s opening match against DR Congo, the seasoned forward responded with a record-breaking goal on the world football stage.
This achievement comes just a day after Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi became the all-time leading goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history, netting his 18th goal against Austria.
Despite holding numerous international records, Ronaldo is still in search of his first goal in World Cup knockout matches and has never played in a World Cup final. However, with Portugal aiming to progress in this expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, the legendary forward could add even more accomplishments to his remarkable career. Ronaldo now has nine goals in World Cup history and remains one of the key players for Portugal in the 2026 edition.
