Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov to Visit India for BRICS Meeting in May

Mumbai, March 31: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is set to visit India for a two-day trip in May to attend the BRICS meeting. This information was shared by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko through local media outlets.

Lavrov will participate in the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers scheduled for May 14-15.

According to Rudenko, the meeting will outline key documents that India will present during the BRICS summit, which India is hosting.

The TASS news agency reported that, apart from the BRICS agenda, Lavrov is also expected to hold a separate bilateral visit. He will meet with India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior officials.

India is chairing BRICS in 2026, with the theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” This theme advances the ‘humanity first and people-centered’ approach introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 17th BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.

During a conference on March 23, Jaishankar emphasized that India aims to strengthen cooperation with Russia during its BRICS presidency to achieve balanced and inclusive solutions to shared global challenges. He also highlighted the need to enhance collaboration on platforms like BRICS, SCO, G20, and the United Nations in a multipolar world.

BRICS was initiated in 2006 during the UN General Assembly in New York, with its first summit taking place in 2009 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The group became BRICS after South Africa joined in 2010. In recent years, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia have become full members, while several other countries have joined as partners.
